Panera Bread: John Maguire (COO & Executive Vice President)
Why this is a big quit:
Maguire worked for Panera Bread for almost two decades. He started as a manager in a Panera restaurant and moved his way up to eventually become the COO and Executive Vice President. Maguire significantly exemplifies upward mobility to people who just started or currently struggle with their careers. Interestingly, Maguire left the company that he had been so committed to for years to take over the CEO position at Friendly’s which just emerged from bankruptcy earlier this year.
Why it’s not as big as our Top 10:
Maguire was definitely an important figure at Panera Bread but not instrumental in its future expansion plans already underway. The negative impact on Panera due to his resignation will be limted. The resignation of co-founder and then CEO Ronald Shaich, was much more significant and in fact made the 2010 Top 10 Biggest Quits list.
