Livestrong Charity: Lance Armstrong (Chairman & Founder)

Why this was a big quit:

An outstanding figure in philanthropy, and by some accounts the greatest athlete in cycling, Lance Armstrong is famous worldwide for winning 7 Tour de France competitions. His charity organization promotes positive images with, and raises funds for, people fighting cancer. For many years, Armstrong has used his athletic celebrityhood to make a lasting contribution to society. His success inspired cancer patients everywhere, spreading his reach far beyond the insular world of cycling and cementing his place in celebrity culture.

Why this is not as big as our Top 10:

To dope or not to dope. That was the question for too many of Armstrong’s teammates. As the scandal progressed, the public considered that this honorable man deceived everyone by secretly using illegal drugs to improve performances. The scandal cost Armstrong all 7 Tour de France titles and the position as the chairman of Livestrong. The magnitude of the incident overwhelmed Armstrong himself, his followers, and the industry. However, the profoundly negative situation precludes Armstrong from our Top 10 list for his resignation.
