FIFA: Sepp Blatter (President)
Why this was a big quit:
Sepp Blatter was reelected to his fifth consecutive term as president of FIFA confirming his position as one of the most powerful men in soccer. Blatter has been a part of FIFA for over 40 years, including the past 17 years as president. Blatter increased FIFA’s revenue from $600 million to $2 billion in the past decade, and the signature World Cup soccer event in more homes than ever before.
Why this is not as big as the top 10:
While Blatter expanded the field of FIFA’s global and financial influence, his reelection was marred with charges of corruption and bribery, and his resignation was flagged by highly substantiated accusations. In December 2015, Blatter received an eight year ban from FIFA after being found guilty of ethics violations. Despite his embattled reign, and the negative publicity to FIFA, the passion for the sport and institution far outweighs the impact of his departure.
