21st Century Fox: Rupert Murdoch (CEO)
Beginning in the land down under, Rupert Murdoch’s career started when he took over a single daily newspaper. Over much of the 20th century, Murdoch acquired more newspapers in Australia and the UK and after becoming a U.S. citizen in 1985, built a media behemoth in 21st Century Fox. The firm includes film studio 20th Century Fox, FOX Broadcasting Company, cable network FX, Fox News, and others. While Murdoch plans to remain involved, his decision to pass the reigns to his children, James and Lachlan, affects the entire industry. Though we will not see an immediate impact from Murdoch’s resignation, serious decisions lay ahead. Sister company, News Corp, remains a strong emotional center for the Murdoch family, but makes little financial sense. Fox Sports struggles against the mothership ESPN. With Murdoch’s infamous involvement absent, who will fill the void? Murdoch was a controversial figure, whose reputation was damaged by scandals that caused one of his largest newspapers to shut down. However, few can deny his impact in the industry and the media titan status he rightly claimed.
